Staff

Arthur Serota, Executive Director
Arthur Serota is a community development and peace building specialist, educator, human rights lawyer and writer with broad nonprofit management experience. For the past thirty years, he has been an Africa advocate and activist, living for many years in grassroots communities in rural Zimbabwe, urban South Africa and Northern Uganda where he contributed to the development of and served as project advisor to community-based agricultural, reforestation, health, education, arts and culture and economic development organizations and projects. His leadership of UMECS in Uganda has led to the development of a high-impact education and internship programs, peace education projects and programs that support grassroots organizations. The author of Ending Apartheid in America (Troubadour Press, 1998), Serota has written and lectured widely on community development, peace building, education, reparations and social justice.


Charles Onencan, Associate Executive Director

Charles Onencan is a community development and youth development specialist with broad organizational leadership, communications technology, program management, events planning and research experience. Born and raised in Northern Uganda, Onencan holds a Bachelors Degree (Hons) in Sports Science from Makerere University Faculty of Science; a Certificate in Internet Technology and Computing from Makerere University Faculty of Computer and Information Technology; a Certificate of Public Administration and Management from Makerere University Institute of Adult and Continuing Education, a Certificate in Peace Education from Makerere Instituteof Adult and Continuing Education, and a Diploma Program in Social Work and Social Work Administration from Makerere Institute of Social Work and Social Work Administration. Onencan leads UMECS’ Northern Uganda Education Program and is Program Director of UMECS Peace Education and Guidance and Counseling Program in Secondary Schools in Northern Uganda. An artist and writer, Onencan is writing a series of cultural stories in English and Luo.


Joel Ojok, Counseling and Guidance Program Director
Joel Ojok is an educator and youth development specialist with strong counseling, program planning and business management experience. Born and raised in Northern Uganda, Ojok holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Makerere University School of Education and a certificate in Computer Application from Makerere University Faculty of Computer and Information Technology. A member of the Uganda Counseling Association, Ojok holds a Diploma Program at the Institute of Advanced Leadership in Counseling and Psychotherapy. He also holds a Certificate in Guidance and Counseling from Makerere University Institute of Adult and Continuing Education. Ojok is attached to UMECS Northern Uganda Education Program and is Guidance and Counseling Coordinator of UMECS Peace Education and Guidance and Counseling Program in Secondary Schools in Northern Uganda.


Anthony Ojok, Education Field Coordinator
Anthony Ojok is a seasoned educator and former headmaster, primary and secondary school classroom teacher in Northern Uganda. He brings strong school administrative, classroom teaching, education pedagogy and mentorship skills to UMECS education programs. Born and raised in Northern Uganda, Anthony Ojok holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Uganda Christian University in Mukono. He also holds a Certificate in Peace Education from Makerere University Institute of Adult and Continuing Education. As Education Field Coordinator for UMECS Northern Uganda Education Program, Anthony Ojok is responsible for school enrollment activities, student oversight, guidance and mentorship and serves as organizational liaison with UMECS partnered secondary schools.

Margaret Akech, Peace Education Coordinator

Margaret Akech is a peace educator, secondary school teacher and youth development specialist with broad program management experience. She earned a degree in Business Education from the Faculty of Education at Gulu University and holds a National Teachers College Diploma in Secondary Education. She also holds a Certificate in Peace Education from Makerere University Institute of Adult and Continuing Education. Akech serves as Peace Education Coordinator in UMECS Peace Education and Guidance and Counseling Program in Secondary Schools in Northern Uganda. In this program, she coordinates peace education classes and student-centered peace activities in seven secondary schools in Northern Uganda. She also serves as a significant mentor to students in UMECS Northern Uganda Education Program.

Douglas Openy, Accounts Manager

Douglas Openy is an accountant and computer specialist with strong community development and project management experience. Born and raised in Northern Uganda, Openy holds a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration/Accounting from Makerere University Business School and a Certificate in Microsoft Office Applications from Makerere University Institute of Computer Sciences. Openy has a strong finance and accounting background in the private and NGO sectors. In addition to his chief role as accounts manager, Openy plays a significant role in UMECS community-based program field work.  


Job Ezama,
Facilities Manager, Kampala Secretariat
Job Ezama is an experienced facilities manager with strong administrative and organizational experience. Job Ezama manages UMECS Secretariat facility in Bugolobi, Kampala and handles administrative duties and events planning. He holds a Higher Diploma in electrical engineering from Kyambogo University.

 

John Oyubi, Assistant Facilities Manager, Kampala Secretariat

John Oyubi is an experienced property maintenance manager, former company supervisor in machine operation and hygiene management and has served as a field officer in refugee food distribution and health programs. Oyubi also provides strong events management skills and assists with administrative duties.

Alex Cardo Okello, Intern

Alex Cardo Okello earned a Bachelors Degree in Economics (Hons) from Gulu University and later served as Deputy Headmaster and economics teacher at Charity College in Gulu. Okello has significant school management and student activities experience and community-based experience working with formerly abducted youth. Okello brings substantial management, business plan development, computer technology, research, project monitoring and evaluation, training and facilitation background and skills to our programs and organization. 

 

Denis Owor, Intern

Denis Owor holds a Diploma in Purchasing and Supplies Management from Makerere University-Gulu Branch and a Certificate in Guidance and Counseling from Makerere University Institute of Ault and Continuing Education. Owor has a significant background working with local NGOs in children’s and youth programs, as a trained food monitor during the war, and conducting research activities in Northern Uganda communities.
